Information About MRCGP RCA Course

A total of 13 actual patient consultations with GP trainees and their consenting patients must be submitted for evaluation. These can be recorded in a GP office or at home and can take the form of phone calls, videos, or in-person consultations.

Changes to the RCA will take effect on the September 2021 diet.

The RCA will stay in place to give time for the new MRCGP RCA Course performance assessment module to be developed. They have considered the opinions of applicants, general practitioners, the training community at large, and other interested parties.

They are revising the RCA in light of this feedback and the helpful suggestions made by MRCGP Examiners (who are also working general practitioners) based on their views of submitted consultations. The September 2021 eating plan filing deadline will trigger their use.

Candidates who were previously unsuccessful in the MRCGP Rca Course have no grounds for appeal because these changes cannot be implemented retroactively. These alterations result from collaboration between the GMC and the Committee of GP Education Directors (COGPED) and have their full backing.

The presence of breast lumps (outside of those related to the postnatal period) will no longer be included in the required maternal and reproductive health criteria.

This requirement was put in place to screen for applicants with the clinical expertise to handle gynecological and obstetrical issues. The simple (but appropriate) referral to a fast-track clinic of a breast surgeon with no other management abilities that fit with the original objective of the criterion results in a low score for breast lumps. Numerous cases of male breast lumps have also been submitted.

Clinical examination will no longer be a required criterion.

Candidates must address the examiner rather than the patient when explaining what examinations would be carried out in the proposed subsequent face-to-face session. As a result, the clinical study will no longer be required in the MRCGP RCA Course, while it will still be examined in Workplace Based Assessment.

The feedback statements and descriptors about safety netting will be changed to include the words "appropriate" and "realistic."

Some 'generic' safety nets offered by candidates, such as "phone 999" or "go immediately to A&E," have been shown to cause unnecessary confusion and distress among patients. By providing specific feedback statements and describing candidates' strengths and weaknesses, candidates' safety nets will be more relevant to patients' concerns.

The current time limit of 10 minutes per case should be raised to 12 minutes.

One of the most commonly voiced wishes in the training community is for more time to be allotted for each instance. In light of the ongoing difficulties posed by COVID, it is understood that consultations in "real life" may take longer than 10 minutes. With more time available, it is intended that applicants, their GP trainers, and their practices will benefit from improved MRCGP RCA Course case selection.

You and your Educational or Clinical supervisor must confirm that the patients shown on your records are from legitimate consultations conducted in a setting that meets the requirements for general practice training.

It's up to you to decide which 13 appointments you want to take advantage of. There is no requirement for your Educational Supervisor to look through these discussions.

While all instances submitted for the RCA should not be used as evidence under WPBA, consultations that have already been evaluated, for example, as a COT, are not eligible for submission.

Providing the RCA

A reservation for the RCA must be made on the RCGP website. A connection to the MRCGP RCA Course, where you can upload recordings or record directly, will be supplied to you once the RCGP Examination Department has verified your booking.

The platform comes with detailed instructions on how to utilize it, including instructions on making direct contact with the patient via the system and establishing a link to the patient's preferred way of communication, such as a mobile phone. Several different audio recordings can be submitted for hosting on the system. Now is the time to start recording your sessions with the doctor.
